Celebrating 2023 Highlights

Dear Dancing Earth Community,

As we reflect on the passing year, Dancing Earth is grateful for the enriching experiences, growth, and connections we've cultivated together. Our journey has taken us through various communities and artistic expressions, and we're excited to share our highlights with you. Extending the spirit of Giving Tuesday, we warmly invite you to join us in celebrating the cherished memories and heartfelt work we've accomplished together.

The Summer Institute

The Summer Institute of June 2023, held on Cal State East Bay University on Ramaytush Ohlone lands (Hayward, California), gathered a budding community of 15. Led by local Indigenous leader Corrina Gould, the program featured 10 workshops aligned with "mixed-cism" and biodiversity. The cohort collaborated to present a heartfelt offering to the Global Waters movement and the local community of Hayward.

In 2024, the Summer Institute plans to re-root in our home of Santa Fe, calling back previous participants and contributors for a program centering movement, collaboration, reflection, gratitude, and creativity. On Tewa/Tiwa lands, we will offer a culminating ritual/performance to honor the legacy of Dancing Earth and share in the creative intentional setting for future worlds.

Support the Summer Institute's journey by contributing to our re-rooting efforts and program development. Your generosity enables us to create spaces for movement, collaboration, and creativity.

Eco Elegies - Ritual of Re:mix

Eco Elegies - Ritual of Re:mix debuted this Fall at Dance Mission Theatre in Yelamu, Ramaytush Ohlone lands of San Francisco, CA. Our newly revived and emerging Bay Area dance company of BIPOC dancers explored 'Mixed-icism,' offering community performance rituals and workshops, including participation in the Mosaic Festival at Mexican Heritage Plaza and SNAG magazine’s 20th-anniversary festival at Hummingbird Farm.

In 2024, Eco Elegies will embark on a transformative journey, touring Mexico for intercultural exchange, performances, and artist residencies in Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Oaxaca. As a Bay Area company, we commit to a deepened Eco-Artivism leadership training process, continuing to share culturally and spiritually rooted ecological consciousness through performance rituals and workshops in our diverse Bay Area communities.

Support the journey of Eco Elegies by contributing to our tour fund and Eco-Artivism leadership training. Your support empowers us to foster cross-cultural connections and ecological awareness through the art of dance.

The Source

The Source, in its inaugural year, wove a tapestry of belonging, creativity, and connection rooted in self-love, wellness, and healing practices. Across Yelamu, Ramaytush Ohlone lands, we hosted transformative community festivals, uniting over 30 community artists and community members. The Southern Community Celebration Festival in Luiseño and Cahuilla territories further emphasized the power of community, stories, food, and laughter.

Looking ahead to 2024, The Source is committed to centering creativity and self-love through diverse gatherings—some online, some in-person. Join us on this continuing journey toward healing hearts, listening to dreams, and receiving guidance and love from the community.

Support The Source in its mission to enrich the soul and ignite the heart through the arts and creative expression. Your contribution directly supports California artists as they cultivate diverse gatherings that champion self-love, wellness, and artistic expression.

UNBOUND Residencies & Performances

UNBOUND completed three impactful residencies in Tiwa Territory/Albuquerque, NM; the Institute for American Indian Arts in Oga’Pogeh Owingeh/Santa Fe, NM; and at the Peñasco Theater in Picuris Pueblo territory/Peñasco, NM. During these residencies, community circles were hosted to connect with Genízaro descendants through storytelling, gentle movement, and shared meals. We showcased a work-in-progress excerpt at the Albuquerque Contemporary Dance Festival and The Source Festival in Ohlone, Ramaytush, and Muwekma territories/San Francisco, CA.

As we approach the end of 2023, we're gearing up for an exciting 2024! In early 2024, we'll conclude creation residencies and head to Jalisco, MX, for another residency and excerpt showing with Eco Elegies. Then, in the fall of 2024, we'll kick off our NM tour, reaching towns and cities with significant genízaro populations. Your support fuels these endeavors—join us on this transformative journey by contributing today.

At this very moment Palestinian people are experiencing incomprehensible violence. We hold space for the Jewish community whose own histories are being used as an excuse for this genocide and occupation. Dancing Earth stands against genocide everywhere. We urge all dancers, artists and supporters to lean into the power of solidarity to call for a ceasefire, refer to this one hour of action list of resources to educate, take action, and aid Palestine.
