Artist Statement :

My goal is to revolutionize the world of dance by encouraging BIPOC folks to have a connection to the arts, specifically dance . As a non-binary queer latinx dancer/choreographer, I want to be able to showcase my pride on what it is to be a Latinx queer artist through movement composition. Having a bicultural, Mexican-American background influences my work. The main source of inspiration for my movement creation in addition to my culture comes from the years of experience I have as a contemporary ballet dancer, student, choreographer, and teacher. I respect and honor those who came before me from the same background who are successful, helpful and inspiring to others of their own. It is encouraging to move forward and pursue a dream to be a Queer Latinx artists that brings pride and recognition to our people. My objective is to inspire others, including the next generation of Queer and Latinx community to spread and spark curiosity for dance, creativity, art, history, and culture.

I use a mixture of inspirations that comes from movies, music, art pieces, and dance improvisation that helps me transform, navigate, and mutate movement for choreographic purposes. I allow myself to explore as much gesticulation of the body as possible, expanding my movement vocabulary for choreography. I want to make the audience intrigued by the intricate movement of the body and how special and important dance is, and how they can relate themselves to art. I like to focus on relating to the audience on a personal, physical, spiritual and/or philosophical level. I desire to facilitate the audience to amplify their inner and outer perception of themselves and appreciation for others who witness one of my pieces. In this environment, the audience is taken into a piece of my imagination where they are able to disconnect from the hardships of life and let them focus on the power of art. I want to use the language of movement to construct an environment that showcases how we are intertwined with each other.

Having graduated from the Alonzo King’s Lines Ballet BFA Program, I have had the opportunity to be a dancer, collaborator and choreographer during my years in higher education. Leading me to choreograph, direct, and edit my first full project for my Senior year of college “The Empress/La Emperatriz '', which for the reason of Covid-19 protocols had to be modified and placed in an online platform. Post-graduation, I became a dancer and collaborator with different companies here in the bay area including Sean DorseyDance. Since I have funded my own company named “Xochipilli Dance Company” that by the support of Deborah Slater Dance Theaterand the Studio 210 Residency Program premiered its first show in July, Summer of 2022. On the same hand, I was able to present new work at the BBQUEER Festival and Sii Agua Si invited by the Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers. I desire to facilitate the audience to amplify their inner and outer perception of themselves and appreciation for others who witness one of my pieces. I want to use the language of movement to construct an environment that showcases how we are intertwined with each other.

Xochipili Dance Company truly believes everyone is valuable and important. We are always in the search of wisdom in how to be better to ourselves and others around us. Respect is one of the most important pillars that we base our company on. We promote and enforce the spread and use of supportive language. Solemnly we do not tolerate or support any type of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia or ableism in this company. We are an ally to all men, women and any other identity that goes inside, out or in between the spectrum. Xochipilli Dance Company is a contemporary ballet based company in the Bay Area representing the Queer and Latinx community through original dance work. Our mission is to showcase how important dance is to our past, present, and future of shared history. We want to inspire everyone to explore dance and recognize that we are all movers. We like to focus on relating on a personal, physical, spiritual, and philosophical level. We desire to facilitate a space for inner and outer reflection. We want to use the language of movement to construct an environment that showcases how we are intertwined with each other.
