The culmination of a 4-day residency at the Kennedy Center, which included a school performance, master class for the Kennedy Center’s auditioned career trajectory program, Contemporary Dance Series, and public events listed below, 2018–2019 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow Rulan Tangen and Dancing Earth’s work is a purposeful performance that activates space as vital transformative gathering ground. Centered in ecological knowledge, Dancing Earth welcomes community to an immersive, interdisciplinary, contemporary dance ritual, culminating in participatory round dance. It evolves from Dancing Earth’s intertribal artists in exchanges with Native elders, farmers, foragers, seed savers, and food and water justice groups, in visioning sessions and movement workshops that root our restoring/restory-ing of land and people.

Please note that since the filming of these, we are no longer referring to Dancing Earth as global Indigenous contemporary dance, but we are describing the work eco-somatic dance : to be inclusive beyond specific identities, while honoring a founding premise to make room for under-represented voices : BIPOC, or english as second language, or undocumented immigrants, or LGTBIA+ , or physical handicaps etc …
